Panopto Staff FAQs
Panopto is the main video hosting platform for the University. Please see further information in our TEL links below:
Please see the ’Viewing Lectures’ Panopto guidance for students here.
You will find guidance on managing and embedding video for students to view within the VLE in the TEL Blackboard Ultra Manual and Staff Panopto Manual:
The settings on the recording control who can see it. By default, recordings are available to staff and students on the course where it is linked.
Please see guidance for staff using Panopto in the TEL Manual: Panopto for Staff
Please see further details here about how to alter the visibility of recordings you have created.
Panopto videos are by default not shareable or downloadable by students. Please see further details about embedding Panopto videos within Ultra, in our guidance here.
Panopto allows cuts to be made at the beginning, middle or end of a video recording. The Panopto video editor is non-destructive. If you cut a section this will always be in the video editing timeline but after publishing changes, will not be in the Panopto viewer. If you accidentally select and cut an incorrect section, you can revert back to the original at any time. If you need to edit Panopto videos, please see TEL Guidance here. Please see further details in Panopto’s ‘How to Edit a Video’ guidance, and accompanying video: ‘Getting started: Edit a Video’.
We advise that you do not pause videos while recording, but to edit afterwards instead: Please see further guidance on editing Panopto recordings
Panopto includes the facility to edit recordings. If you need to edit Panopto videos, please see TEL Guidance here. Please see further details in Panopto’s ‘How to Edit a Video’ guidance, and accompanying video: ‘Getting started: Edit a Video’
Panopto does not allow this within the platform. However, you can embed Panopto recordings in a discussion board should you want to give students the opportunity to ask questions.
Tutors can also add Quizzes to Panopto videos or within an Learn Ultra course – please see further details here.
It is possible for staff to obtain viewing statistics for Panopto videos – please see further details here. Staff can access these for individual videos or for videos in an entire course.
Sharing lecture recordings outside of Blackboard is generally not recommended. By adding lectures within the VLE through an embedded video, this ensures that students enrolled on to a module can gain access to recordings. Please see further details about managing video content and embedding Panopto videos within Ultra below:
Please see our guidance on deleting Panopto video recordings for staff here.
Panopto is the University’s recommended tool for conducting video assessment.

The answer to this depends on whether you require help for Panopto use in the teaching rooms, which is supported by IT, or advice regarding using Panopto as a teaching and learning tool, which is supported by the Technology Enhanced Learning Unit.
Advice and Guidance on how to use the AV equipment with Panopto in our teaching spaces can be found on the IT website via the following link: What should I do if the teaching space equipment isn’t working properly? – IT Service
If, after visiting this webpage, you are still unsure or would like some more practical guidance or training, our User Experience team runs AV workshops twice a month in a variety of rooms. They will show you lots of different equipment, the best way to use it during your sessions, and how the technology in the spaces can boost student engagement.
To sign up for one of these sessions, they are bookable on iTrent on the learning portal via this link: https://ce0816li.webitrent.com/ce0816li_ess
If you require advice or training from a learning and teaching perspective, including managing Panopto videos within your Blackboard modules and using Panopto for video assessment, you will find lots of information in the TEL Panopto manual via this link: Panopto for Staff
If however, you need further assistance, please contact the Technology Enhanced Learning Unit at tel@worc.ac.uk to arrange a conversation with a Learning Technologist.
Staff members can use Panopto Capture to create a lecture recording on their laptop. This is also an excellent way to incorporate shorter videos into your course.
Please see our Capture Checklist for further guidance.
Please see the Policy for Recording Teaching Sessions, linked below.
Students’ embedded video submission attempts can be found in the Blackboard assignment, or via the Grade Centre: Grading Assignments
However, if any of your students have any issues embedding a video submission within Blackboard you are welcome to share our Panopto Student Guide. This includes advice about troubleshooting and where to get help. Students can also contact TEL for support at tel@worc.ac.uk.
If any of your students have create a video using Panopto but have not been able to embed their video as a submission attempt within Blackboard, please do not hesitate to contact us for further support, tel@worc.ac.uk.
Video content is archived if it hasn’t been accessed for 24 months. It will stay in the archive for six years before being permanently deleted. If you don’t want to keep a recording, it’s best practice to delete it yourself. Please see our guidance for Deleting videos here.
It is not recommended to use the Panopto platform to live stream a lecture or event. We recommend using Microsoft Teams Webinars for most online events. Further information on Webinars can be found here: Get started with Microsoft Teams webinars. Alternatively, please contact the IT Service desk to discuss streaming options.
